Embrace Adventure: Tips for Taking the Long Way to Explore and Discover More

You Don’t Have to Go Far

A different path. A slower pace. A little room to think.

It’s easy to save exploring for someday. A free weekend. A longer vacation. A destination worth the drive.

But there’s plenty to discover in an ordinary afternoon.

A trail you’ve passed without walking. A stretch of shoreline beyond your usual turnaround. A side road you’ve always wondered about. Sometimes, the start of an adventure is simply deciding to see what’s there.

Notice more

On a familiar route, we tend to move from one thing to the next. We know the turns. We know where we’re going.

Take a different path and there’s more to pay attention to: the shape of a ridgeline, wind moving through the trees, a patch of sunlight that makes you stop for a moment.

You don’t need to cover much ground. Give yourself time to look around.

Make room

An outing doesn’t have to become another task to finish.

Leave the pace open. Stop when something catches your eye. Sit somewhere for a while without needing to make the moment useful.

There’s something satisfying about coming home with a little dirt on your shoes and no particular achievement to report. You went outside. You spent some time there. That can be enough.

Start close to home

For your next outing, try one small change:

Walk a new trail. Choose a nearby route you haven’t tried. Check the conditions, bring what you need, and leave time to enjoy it.

Revisit a familiar place. Go at a different time of day or in another season. See what you missed the first time.

Leave an hour unplanned. Pick a starting point and let curiosity shape the rest. Follow an open public path, pause at a viewpoint, or take the longer route back.

Keep it simple enough that you’ll actually go.

A couple of good companions

For cool starts, the Varden Quarter Zip brings our super soft bamboo fabric to an easy everyday layer.

The Nomad Pocket Tee, made from a soft bamboo and cotton blend, is a comfortable starting point beneath it—or on its own as the day warms up.

Two pieces to reach for when the plan is simply to get outside.

Take the long way

You may find a new favorite spot. You may come back with a story. You may just enjoy an hour away from your usual routine.

Pick somewhere nearby. Leave a little room for discovery.
